Roaches take over on 'Hoarding: Buried Alive'

TLC

By Ree Hines

Get ready to get bugged out!

On the next episode of "Hoarding: Buried Alive," viewers will meet Sherry, a woman who's coped with depression and the loss of her mother by not coping with the growing mess in her own home. It's driven her husband out of the house and provided the perfect environment for a slew of creepy crawly tenants.

See for yourself in this sneak peek, but roach-phobes be warned: the bugs get plenty of screen time.

"We've got a roach infestation that is very large," Sherry explained in one major understatement.

The insects were, in fact, skittering across surfaces throughout the house. An open can of food in the kitchen alone was filled three inches deep with roaches. Even the refrigerator, or what one exterminator called "an incubator," was packed with them.

And as it turned out, unbeknownst to Sherry, roaches weren't her only pest problem. Hidden beneath trash on her kitchen floor, exterminators found a nest of black widow spiders.

"I'm really concerned about the safety of you and your kids in that house," a psychologist warned Sherry after the spider discovery. "This is a really disturbing environment. It's not safe."

Sherry wasn't particularly responsive to the warning.

"I don't know what you want me to say," she muttered shortly before storming off.

Later, as members of a hazmat team removed bag after bag of garbarge from the home, Sherry told another expert she wanted nothing to do with the psychologist.

"She's a b----. I don't like her. I don't want her around me," she said while crying in her car.

Find out whether Sherry was able to fully confront her hoarding problems when "Hoarding: Buried Alive" airs Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on TLC.

Do you think Sherry will be able maintain the changes the "Hoarding" crew and exterminators make, or do you expect the mess and the pests to come back? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.?

Ash leads Texas over Cal 21-10 in Holiday Bowl

(AP) ? David Ash threw for one touchdown and caught a TD pass to lead Texas to a 21-10 victory against California in the Holiday Bowl on Wednesday night.

The Longhorns (8-5) had five takeaways and sacked Cal's Zach Maynard six times.

The Golden Bears (7-6) are winless in five games against the Longhorns dating to 1959.

Ash caught a 4-yard pass from wide receiver Jaxon Shipley in the second quarter to join BYU's Steve Young, Texas A&M's Bucky Richardson and Oregon's Joey Harrington as quarterbacks who've caught scoring passes in the Holiday Bowl.

Texas coach Mack Brown joked on Tuesday how much it still bugged him that Harrington caught a TD pass in the Ducks' 35-30 win against Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl. The Oregon offensive coordinator then was Jeff Tedford, who has been Cal's coach since 2002. Harrington now works for the Longhorn Network.

How Animals Stay Warm with Blubber

blubber warmth Can landlubbers use blubber?: Discover one of the tricks some animals have evolved to keep warm in chilly waters. Image: George Retseck

Key concepts
Temperature
Heat transfer
Adaptation
Insulation
Fatty tissue

Introduction
Have you ever wondered how whales and other marine mammals survive and keep warm in the cold oceans? Warm-blooded mammals can live in these chilly conditions because their bodies have some cool warmth-saving adaptations, thanks to generations of natural selection.

In other words, to pass on characteristics (via their genes), the predecessors of modern marine mammals had to overcome different challenges to reproduce, and their descendants received the genes that allowed for their survival. This kind of change in organisms over time is what fuels evolution. An important adaptation for marine mammals is blubber, a thick, insulating layer of fat beneath the skin that helps to keep body warmth in and the cold of the air or water out. Will a layer of fake blubber?in the form of shortening?help you keep from getting cold?

Background
Mammals that have evolved to live in cold waters, such as whales, seals, sea lions and polar bears, commonly have a layer of blubber. Whether they are living in cold waters near the North Pole or around Antarctica or are visiting the deep ocean, these animals' blubber is vital to their survival. During the winter, the air in the Arctic (the northernmost part of the world) is often below ?40 degrees Celsius (?40 degrees Fahrenheit). Antarctica, the coldest place in the world, can be below ?60 degrees C (?76 degrees F). Depending on the species, whales dive more than 400 or 500 meters (about one fourth of a mile) deep in the ocean, where the water can be colder than 12 degrees C (54 degrees F).

Blubber helps these marine mammals from getting too cold. (Cold-blooded marine animals, such as fish, sharks or crabs, do not need to stay warm and can let their body temperatures get closer to that of the water. Thus, they do not need to have this extra insulation.) Blubber is a thick layer of fat (adipose) tissue. Animals store extra digested food in the form of adipose tissue, which contains molecules called lipids. Adipose tissue has a relatively low thermal conductivity, which means that it does not transfer heat as well as other tissues and materials?such as muscle or skin. That way, it helps to insulate an animal's body.

Materials
??? ?Two bowls
??? ?Cold water
??? ?Warm water
??? ?Ice cubes
??? ?Shortening (such as Crisco)
??? ?Paper towels
??? ?Stopwatch
??? ?Thermometer
??? ?A partner

Preparation
??? ?Put an equal number of ice cubes into each bowl without filling either bowl too full. Add cold water to each bowl.
??? ?Measure the temperature of the water in each bowl with a thermometer. They should be the same temperature. When the temperature levels off (which should happen quickly), the water is ready for the test.

Procedure
??? ?Cover your pointer finger on one hand with a thick layer of shortening, covering the entire area that will be submerged in the water. Leave your other pointer finger clean and bare.
??? ?Have your partner prepare the stopwatch. When he or she is ready, put the pointer finger of each hand into one of the bowls of ice water and have your partner start timing you. As soon as your finger feels too cold to keep it in the water any longer, take it out. How long did you leave each finger in the bowl?
??? ?Let your fingers warm up and return to their normal color. If any shortening came off of the covered finger, reapply it.
??? ?Have your partner help you pour the cold water down the sink and refill the two bowls with warm water (make sure it is warm but not hot enough to burn the skin).
??? ?Measure the temperature of the water in each bowl with a thermometer. They should be about the same. In the warm water, do you think you'll see the same result?
??? ?Have your partner time how long you can leave each finger in the bowls of warm water. How long did you leave each finger in the bowl? Was the time difference between the two fingers larger or smaller than when you put your fingers in the ice-cold water?? ?
??? ?Extra: How consistent are your results? You can repeat this activity two or three times, recording the temperature of the different waters tested and the time each finger was in the water. Then make a graph out of your results. In which environment did the shortening "adaptation" consistently give an advantage?

U.K. Charity Preps $25-$35 PCs For Early 2012 Launch (NewsFactor)

A high-tech charity based in the United Kingdom is prepping two models of a credit-card-sized PC that will be available for purchase early next year for $25 and $35, respectively.

Among other things, the cheap price and lower power requirements of the new devices from the Raspberry Pi organization promise to make it less worrisome for parents everywhere to permit their children to tinker with the innards of a fully capable computing machine.

One major organization goal is to provide developing countries with an affordable means of deploying inexpensive computing devices in areas where the cost, power and hardware requirements of traditional desktop machines are prohibitive obstacles.

"We want to see cheap, accessible, programmable computers everywhere," the Raspberry Pi development team said.

What's more, the new Raspberry Pi machines will provide children as well as adult hobbyists with a platform for compiling and running home-grown software apps without risking the family's significantly more expensive machines.

At the outset, the tiny machine will run the ArchLinux, Debian and Fedora distributions of ARM GNU/Linux, which users will be able to purchase on preloaded SD cards sold separately.

"We want owning a truly personal computer to be normal for children," the Raspberry Pi development team said. "We think that 2012 is going to be a very exciting year."

A Multimedia Powerhouse

Don't be fooled by the device's tiny footprint and low cost. Raspberry Pi is fully capable of rendering Blu-ray-quality, 1080p video playback. What's more, the machine integrates the requisite hardware-accelerated graphics capabilities for supporting imaging, a camcorder, streaming media and 3D gaming.

At the heart of the diminutive device is Broadcom's BCM2835 system on a chip, which features a standard ARM v6 core running at 700MHz. Also aboard is Broadcom's dual-core Videocore IV multimedia co-processor and Videocore graphics processor unit. Additionally, the tiny PC board integrates a RAM chip as well as an SD card slot.

With respect to connecting to peripherals, Raspberry Pi sports composite video and HDMI outputs that will enable experimenters to use either a digital or analog television as a display. Moreover, a USB port supplies the connection for a hub to which users can attach a USB keyboard, mouse and other peripherals.

Though a Wi-Fi radio is not aboard the device itself, users will be able to add wireless capabilities by plugging in a USB dongle. Additionally, the $35 model includes a standard 10/100 wired Ethernet port.

The Raspberry Pi will initially ship without a case, though the U.K. charity expects to offer one later on. The 5-volt power supply, which connects to the board via the USB port, will be sold separately.

An Opportunity For Hobbyists

The Raspberry Pi is also expected to provide adult hobbyists with a basic platform for experimentation even as ARM chip architectures make forays over time through the sheer weight of the diversity of the chip ecosystems being designed today, noted Al Hilwa, director of applications software at IDC.

"As systems trend towards further miniaturization, they will inevitably grow lower in cost," Hilwa said. "It is not inconceivable to have PC functionality shift to phone CPUs as these chips ramp up in cores and gigahertz, but this scenario is at least five years away from mainstreaming."

In the meantime, Hilwa believes there will likely be a renaissance for Linux systems such as the ArchLinux, Debian and Fedora distributions of ARM GNU/Linux that will be supplied for the Raspberry Pi at the outset.

This will especially be the case "for hobbyists who will be increasingly cut out of mainstream platforms because of their tight control through app stores and restricted programming models," Hilwa said.

NBA: Could Nate Robinson Return to the Knicks?

Knicks coach Mike D?Antoni said Glen Grunwald is looking into signing an extra point guard for the roster, possibly a D-League player or recent cut, following an injury to rookie Iman Shumpert. ?Read more after the jump.

@Shay_Marie x @gametimegirl

Asked about recent cut Nate Robinson, D?Antoni smiled wide and said, ?We?ll look into it.??

Now that would be desperate move, but don?t count on it.

Multiple sources told The Post the D?Antoni-Robinson relationship was very bad and the head coach was just ?being nice.? D?Antoni once put Robinson in the doghouse for 14 straight games during the 2009-10 season, prompting agent Aaron Goodwin to demand a trade for his client.

The coaches felt Robinson was a disruptive influence in the locker room.

Though he was labeled here as being immature, Robinson performed well in the 2010 NBA Finals vs. the Lakers when he was with the Celtics. Robinson was traded to the Thunder last season in the Jeff Green deal.

The Knicks depth at point guard situation is in disarray, with backup Mike Bibby missing the season opener with back spasms and Shumpert out 2-4 weeks with a sprained left knee.

The Knicks also lost reserve power forward Jared Jeffries for at least a week with a calf strain, leaving them thin there, too.

?It would probably be in the backcourt,? D?Antoni said of a potential signing. ?You have three [point guards], two of them are questionable, one is out and one is hurt. You think maybe we have to do something. We?ll try to rectify the situation.??

The Knicks have one roster spot open and D?Antoni said the signing could be a short-term situation. They may have eyes on forward Kenyon Martin in March. The Post reported Martin?s first choice is to be with the Knicks and Carmelo Anthony wants him in New York.

GOP hopefuls know where to find slice of Iowa life

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa ? Iowa is not, as many Republican presidential hopefuls are finding out, merely the land of mom-and-pop coffee shops, quaint town squares and golden farm fields. It's also the home of Pizza Ranch.

The Iowa-based chain, where the salad bar holds ham chunks and five kinds of mayonnaise-based salads, and covered wagons grace the napkins, has become the de facto stop for conservative candidates ? in part because Pizza Ranches are in virtually every town.

Michele Bachmann visited 14 Pizza Ranches in one recent week; the "fast casual" restaurant fits with her blink-and-you-miss-it campaign strategy that sometimes includes 11 events a day.

"If there's an event at the Pizza Ranch, nine times out of 10, it's a political event," said Craig Robinson, editor of the website Iowa Republican. "They all seem more than willing to host any candidate coming through town."

The cowboy-themed restaurants, which serve pizza, fried chicken and greens from a "mile-long" salad bar, are popular political destinations because they don't charge for events and are located in the small and midsize towns candidates need to visit on their whistle-stop tours through the state.

Conservatives like Pizza Ranch because it's a Christian-oriented restaurant whose mission is "to glorify God by positively impacting the world we live in" and whose charity blog, PizzaRanchServes, often discusses Bible passages.

"We call it Christian Pizza because it is a chain that's also a ministry, which does good works in a faith-centered way," said Steffen Schmidt, an Iowa State University professor.

Bob Vander Plaats, head of the Family Leader, a conservative group, said Pizza Ranch restaurants became more popular for politicians after Mike Huckabee based many of his campaign events at them in 2008 and pulled off a surprise caucus win.

Vander Plaats, who attended high school with Pizza Ranch founder Adrie Groeneweg, stopped at 69 of the restaurants during a 99-county bus tour this year to unite conservative voters.

But Huckabee wasn't the first candidate to stump at the restaurants: Previous campaigners include Dan Quayle and even a couple of Democrats, Howard Dean and John Edwards.

"I wish I could take credit for what's become known as the Pizza Ranch strategy," said Eric Woolson, who managed Huckabee's campaign in 2008. "But the truth is, necessity is the mother of invention; when you're under the gun trying to schedule a location and find someplace quick and convenient, it works out."

Many Pizza Ranches appeal to upstart candidates because the rooms are small enough that they don't look too empty if only a dozen people show up. Candidates also know what they're getting into at a Pizza Ranch: chairs with horseshoes on the back, bathrooms marked "Cowboys" and "Cowgirls," crayons for the kids and murals of cowboys leading covered wagons past golden mountains.

In a rocky economy, candidates can win points by appearing at low-cost restaurants to show they understand what voters are going through, said Hilary Allen, a planner at Barkley, a Missouri ad agency. "It's an opportunity to a politician to fit in with the average American, especially in the current economy," she said.

As Americans increasingly demand food on the go, even the smallest towns in Iowa and across the heartland have attracted franchises and fast-food restaurants.

For example, Hawarden, population about 2,400, has a Pizza Ranch and a Subway, another popular campaign stop. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad visited many Subway franchises during his re-election campaign, and he says he lost 15 pounds.

Branstad is a Republican, and Republicans tend to be the more frequent visitors to Pizza Ranch.

"Even food has become politicized," said Schmidt, the Iowa State professor.

Asked whether a Democratic candidate had been at any of his three Pizza Ranch franchises, John Mohr wrinkled his forehead and looked at his manager, Natalie.

"No, I don't think we've ever had a Democrat here," he said as voters crammed into a room with stars and belt buckles on the walls to prepare for a Bachmann visit.

She soon strode past the salad bar, the Christmas tree topped with a red cowboy hat and the line of stockings tacked to the wall.

"I'm going to repeal Obamacare, repeal Dodd-Frank and get rid of the tax code," she told a few dozen voters, as a twangy country song played in the background.

Fifteen minutes after Bachmann entered, she was gone, followed by aides and the media. Five minutes later, the restaurant was empty again, except for a pile of blue Bachmann signs, three employees in red shirts and Don Hughes, who looked perplexed.

Hughes, holding two pizza boxes, wasn't sure what all the commotion was about.

"I just came to get pizza," he said.

Obamas spending low-key Christmas Eve in Hawaii (AP)

HONOLULU ? President Barack Obama and his family are easing into vacation mode, spending a low-key Christmas Eve out of the spotlight.

The president spent his first morning in Hawaii at a multimillion-dollar vacation home his family rents in the Kailua Beach area, near Honolulu. He skipped his standard early morning gym workout, and headed to the golf course later Saturday.

First lady Michelle Obama, meanwhile, got into the Christmas spirit by helping track Santa for NORAD. The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955.

The White House said Mrs. Obama answered several calls from children around the country who wanted to know how close Santa was to their homes.

The Obamas were to spend Christmas Eve at home with a close circle of family and friends that typically joins the president for his annual Hawaiian vacation. They include Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in the state with her family, and several friends the president has known since high school.

The president's annual December trip to the state where he was born and mostly raised almost didn't happen. He had planned to arrive in Hawaii on Dec. 17, but delayed his departure while Congress worked its way through a stalemate over extending payroll tax cuts.

A deal was finalized Friday morning. Hours later, the president boarded Air Force One for Hawaii to meet his wife and daughters, who traveled ahead of him.

Obama's first order of business when he arrived was taking his wife out to dinner. The couple joined a few friends at Morimoto restaurant, one of their favorite dining spots on the island of Oahu.

The president has no public events planned in Hawaii. A small group of advisers accompanied him to brief him on domestic and international developments.

The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

Donald Trump Leaves GOP, Registers as Independent

Donald Trump continues to dabble with the idea of running for President, switching his voter registration from Republican to unaffiliated so he can run as an independent should he choose to enter the 2012 race.

Registered in New York, Trump filed the paperwork on Thursday and his spokesman Michael Cohen told NBC News of Trump?s decision on Friday.

He reiterated Trump?s oft-stated position on running ? he will run if the Republicans fail to nominate a candidate he believes can unseat Barack Obama.

Trump?s candidacy would not get under way for several months as he will wait until his reality show, ?The Apprentice,? concludes in May of 2012.

Rosneft passes ExxonMobil to become world's top oil producer

Russia's state-run Rosneft oil company has become the world's largest producer after surpassing U.S. giant ExxonMobil, Voice of Russia radio reported Thursday (Dec. 22). The difference in their volumes of production is about 1 million tons, a small amount compared with their total production. Not only is the Russian company planning to preserve its position, it also intends to improve its key indicators.

Rosneft boasts oil production facilities in northern Russia, Siberia and the Far East, as well as seven refineries. Since 2004, it has been working at the world's largest oil deposits. In the past nine months, it has produced almost 90 million metric tons of oil, leaving the American company behind. At the same time, Rosneft has huge potential, said Natalya Shulyar, an expert in the fuel and energy sector.

"Considering that Russia is the world's largest oil producer, it's no surprise that Rosneft has reached the world's top position in production. The company is developing fast and is investing in new projects, that's why, it has good prospects," Shulyar said.

Rosneft projects include development of offshore oil fields and of the Vankor oil and gas field in East Siberia. The oil extracted from the Vankor field will fill the East Siberia-Pacific oil pipeline. Moreover, the company is involved in developing the Carabobo-2 oil field in Venezuela.

Despite its success in oil production the Russian company's overall production of hydrocarbons is half the amount extracted by its main competitor, ExxonMobil. Rosneft has set itself a target to improve its performance in other key areas by 2012 -- the production of natural gas and gas condensate. To this end, it needs to concentrate on expanding into new regions, an expert in energy issues, Sergei Pikin, told Voice of Russia in an interview.

"Unlike all the Russian oil and gas companies, ExxonMobil is a multinational company," Pikin said. "Consequently, the potential for Rosneft's development lies in the diversification of its regions of operation, which will help expand the resource base and bring it closer to major oil-consuming centers. This model would help the company to receive additional preferences."

Rosneft and ExxonMobil are partners as well as competitors. A few months ago, the companies agreed to conduct joint exploration of oil fields in the Arctic, while at the same time Russia will get an opportunity to extract oil from U.S. oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico and in Texas.

Google activating 700,000 Android devices daily, nearing 250 million total (Appolicious)

Want to talk about some crazy numbers? Google says that it?s approaching a total of 250 million activated Android devices worldwide. That?s getting close to the entire population of the United States, represented in Android users.

TechCrunch has the story, in which it reported that Google has sized up the number of Android devices it says are being activated daily to 700,000, according to a Twitter update from Android chief Andy Rubin. Back in June, the number of Android devices activated each day was 500,000, nothing to sneeze at itself, although the 700,000 mark is significantly higher. Not only is Android sweeping into expanding smartphone markets all over the world, it?s even increasing the speed of its growth.

Market analyst firm Asymco charted the increase in Android activations over the last three years, and the climb is pretty staggering. Aysmco analyst Horace Dediu estimates that there have been somewhere between 224 million and 253 million activated Android smartphones to date (back in November, Google mentioned there were 200 million activated devices). Compare that to Apple?s iOS, which the Cupertino tech giant announced in October had 250 million activated devices, which includes iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads. It?s not certain how many iPhones Apple sells in a day, but crunching the numbers from the 17 million that were sold in the previous quarter of 2011, TechCrunch estimates the number at around 190,000 per day; that?s short iPhone 4S sales, though, which reportedly sold at about 1.3 million per day during its first three days available. Still, it?s unlikely Apple is matching Google?s pace.

Android is seeing some big growth in Europe and emerging markets in Asia; an analysis from Gartner last month found that Android devices accounted for about 53 percent of all the smartphones sold in the third quarter of 2011. The company also announced recently that its Android Market had hit 10 billion app downloads, showing that all those Android phones floating around the world are converting to app sales, as well. Though Apple and Google are constantly battling for supremacy in one arena or another when it comes to the mobile sphere, at least in the growth category, Android is still leading by a considerable margin.

OnLive jumps aboard the Xperia PLAY

If you?re still looking for last-minute holiday gifts, you might want to consider a Sony Xperia PLAY, because now the smartphone can play PC games.

Sony?s PlayStation-branded smartphone was recently added to the list of devices that supports OnLive?s streaming video games app, which allows users to stream video game releases like Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Batman: Arkham City to some smartphones and tablets. The big upside of the Xperia PLAY is that it has a slide-out gamepad, making it ideal for playing actual video games. Users of other devices have to rely on either touch controls, which aren?t available for all games, or pay $49.99 for a wireless OnLive controller.

Adding OnLive to the Xperia PLAY is a pretty big boon for the device. It seems to have struggled to find a dedicated fanbase, despite being a quality piece of mobile gaming equipment. Using OnLive?s streaming service (which allows you to pay a monthly subscription for unlimited play of several games, rent games for a smaller fee for a series of days, or purchase games outright on the service for unlimited play) basically turns the Xperia PLAY into a mobile PlayStation 3, in a sense. And that pretty much makes it the most powerful handheld gaming device on the market right now.

Just keep in mind, if you do play PC games on your Xperia PLAY, that you?ll need a pretty solid Wi-Fi Internet connection to effectively stream games.

60 Inspiring Examples of Twitter in the Classroom | Online Universities

Social media offers some great opportunities for learning in the classroom, bringing together the ability to collaborate, access worldwide resources, and find new and interesting ways to communicate in one easily accessible place. Teachers around the world have found innovative ways to use Twitter as a teaching tool, and we?ve shared many of these great ideas here with you. Read on, and we?ll explore 60 inspiring ways that teachers and students can put Twitter to work in the classroom.

Communication

Twitter makes staying in touch and sharing announcements super simple and even fun. These ideas offer a great way to put the tool to good use.

  1. Twitter as a bulletin board: Jim Newman at Northern Illinois University uses Twitter as a bulletin board for his class, letting students know about last minute news like canceled classes.
  2. Ambient office hours: With Twitter, Howard Rheingold at Berkeley uses Twitter for group contact, which he calls "student-to-teacher-to-student ambient office hours."
  3. Keep students in the loop: Using hashtags on Twitter, students who were not able to make it to class can follow along and stay on top of the conversation.
  4. Assignment coordination: Instead of emailing each other or waiting to meet in class, students can collaborate on projects and keep track of changes by using a Twitter hashtag.
  5. Silencing blurters: For students who have trouble with disruptive blurting, allow them to instantly tweet their blurts silently instead of out loud.
  6. Student engagement in large lectures: In large lecture classes where student participation can be intimidating and logistically problematic, Twitter can make it easy for students to engage and discuss during class time.
  7. Parent communication: Parents can sign up to receive tweets from teachers, learning about activities, tests, projects, and more.
  8. Instant feedback: Twitter makes it easy to get instant approval and disapproval of discussions, issues, and more right in the classroom.
  9. Attendance reminders: For students who have trouble making it to class on time, send reminders before school to get them in the door earlier.
  10. Digital faculty lounge: At Kent State University, college of education teacher William Kist uses Twitter as a "digital faculty lounge" for networking with other professors.
  11. Stay on top of the learning process: Ask students to tweet and reply about what they?re learning, difficulties they?ve faced, tips, resources, and more as an online logbook.
  12. Classroom notepad: Using a Twitter hashtag, it?s easy to organize inspiration, reading, ideas, and more for the classroom to share.
  13. Completed assignments: Students can let teachers know when they?ve finished their work by alerting them on Twitter.
  14. Teaching bite-sized info: Share medical terminology, Shakespeare quotes, kindergarten activities, and more on Twitter.
  15. Twitter pop quiz: Send out quick quizzes on Twitter, and have them count for bonus points in the classroom.

Organization

Twitter?s hashtags and other tools share a great way to organize information for your classroom.

  1. Twitter recaps: At the end of the day, teachers can summarize what has been learned in the classroom, encouraging reflection and discussion between students.
  2. Classroom connections: Classrooms around the world can collaborate using Twitter as a communication tool.
  3. Collating classroom views: Students can share their opinions on issues or any open questions, and they can be organized using Twitter.
  4. Corraling comments in class: Monica Rankin at the University of Texas at Dallas uses weekly hashtags to organize comments, questions and feedback that students have used in class, while also projecting live tweets in class for discussion.

Resources

Use these ideas to take advantage of the vast resources that Twitter has to offer.

  1. Finding great resources: Teachers can ask for recommended books, teaching tools, and ideas for lessons, crowdsourcing resources for the classroom.
  2. Following historical figures: There are many Twitter accounts set up that share the lives and personalities of historical figures, and students can follow them for fun and learning.
  3. Building a brand: Long after school is over, a personal brand will live on for students. Using Twitter in the classroom to build a brand is a valuable exercise for students.
  4. Partner with local organizations: Discuss cultural and educational events in the area on Twitter.
  5. Talk to career experts: High school students exploring their career options can talk to professions in the paths they?re considering on Twitter.
  6. Conversations are a public study tool: Long after the conversation in class is over, students can look back on the lecture discussion to find important points when it?s time to take exams or write essays.
  7. Source evaluation: Students can share resources and discuss whether it?s a good or bad source of information, encouraging comments.
  8. Foreign language news stream: Students in a foreign language class can build their reading skills and stay on top of the news with a foreign language news stream.
  9. Gather real-world data: The classroom can ask Twitter for data from their network, like temperatures, opinions, locations, and interesting facts.
  10. Following the government: Often, local and national political figures have Twitter feeds, and students in the classroom can track their progress.
  11. Ask for help or advice: Using Twitter, teachers can find out if anyone has advice about teaching issues, like when certificates expire or how to handle classroom management.
  12. Communicating with experts: Find authors, scientists, or historians on Twitter and get connected; a great resource for the classroom.

Writing Skills

These are just a few of the great opportunities that Twitter offers for building reading and writing skills.

  1. Vocabulary building: Students can tweet sentences using a particular word to build vocabulary learning.
  2. Twitter can improve writing and punctuation: As long as students are held accountable for their grammar, using Twitter offers a great opportunity for improving writing and punctuation.
  3. Daily word games: Ask students to unscramble anagrams, contribute synonyms, or give vocabulary definitions on Twitter.
  4. Grammar review: Students can tweet past tense, run on sentences, compound sentences, and more.
  5. An exercise in learning to be concise: At the College of the Holy Cross, assistant professor Daniel Klinghard uses Twitter to teach students to be concise, summarizing major political texts without going over Twitter-imposed character limits.

Twitter Exercises

From scavenger hunts to Twitter stories, these exercises offer great ways to use Twitter as a teaching tool.

  1. Inspirational quotes of the day: Allow students to become more familiar with Twitter, and exercise reading and writing skills by having a student post an inspirational quote tweet each day, preferably relating to course content.
  2. Conversations can continue outside of class: When students participate in Twitter discussions in class, there?s a great opportunity for conversations to continue to develop even after the lecture is over.
  3. School trip tracking: Whether it?s a field trip or a long journey, students can log and track their progress on a school trip using Twitter.
  4. Bringing characters to life: At California State University-San Marcos, students in a literature course use Twitter to bring Twilight characters to life, choosing characters from the series to personify on Twitter.
  5. Class newspaper: The entire class can come together to create a newspaper, contributing to sections using hashtags.
  6. Conference following: Students can follow professionals and industry conferences to see what?s going on in that particular realm.
  7. Bonus assignments: Give students optional bonus work to do at home, assigned via Twitter.
  8. Meme tracking: Students can study communication and sociology through the tracking of ideas and ads that spread through Twitter.

Bernanke to discuss Europe with GOP senators (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will meet with Senate Republicans on Wednesday afternoon to discuss his views of Europe's financial crisis.

Bernanke's appearance follows an invitation from Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the chairman of the Senate Republican conference. The closed-door session comes after a similar discussion Bernanke held with Senate Democrats on Oct. 20.

Fed policymakers held their final meeting of the year Tuesday. In a statement afterward, they portrayed the economy as slightly healthier despite risks from the European crisis. The Fed held off on any new steps to boost U.S. growth.

In its statement Tuesday, the Fed warned of risks to the economy from strains in global financial markets, a reference to Europe's problems.
