Online Games - The Evolution

Now we see thousands of people playing online games ?uch a? tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super mario ?tc f?r free but de???t? ?ts history dating back t? 1970s, f?r most people online gaming began with th? explosion ?f Internet in 1993 and w?th the advent ?f Doom and Warcraft som?t?m? ?n 1994 or 1995. This g?t further boost w?th publishers starting to add Internet connectivity t? computer games in 1994-95.

The media, in fact, hav? th?ms?lves b??n ignorant ?b?ut online games history. As f?r a? they ?r? concerned, online gaming ?ust coincidentally happened when th??r advertisers started producing Internet-capable games. But ?t ?sn't so...

Early Years ?f development

In early 1950's ? college student created a game mu?h l?ke Tic-Tac-Toe f?r ? class project to b? played ?n dinosaur computers ?f th??? days complete with cathode ray tubes f?r the screen display. The 1960's h?d MIT students programming a game called "Space war" that ?ould be played w?th two people ?v?r a primitive network. The late 1960's brought the f?r?t "real" video games l?ke table tennis and shooter games.

The 70s - the game begins

Serious online gaming began w?th th? fir?t interactive online game called ADVENT. In fact networked gaming g?t conceptualized with ADVENT. Networked gaming h?d users playing ?gainst each ?th?r within an online fantasy world. The f?rst networked game w?s called Mazewar, a game which involved networked players traveling thr?ugh ? maze and attempting to kill ?ne another.

Next ?am? th? interpersonal interaction ?n ? multi-player environment. The first su?h game w?? called DUNGEN. DUNGEN had players competing ag?inst ?n? ?n?th?r to complete a series of quests. DUNGEN provided w?th new settings ?nd players e?ch time the user logged on.

The late 1970's s?w th? start of video game craze w?th m?re and m?r? households getting computer savvy. As ? natural corollary, people started writing th?ir ?wn games f?r the home computers. These programming hobbyists traded ?nd sold th?se home-grown games ?n local markets.

Other ch?ng?s in the 1970's wer? home gaming consoles wh??h used game cartridges. That meant the people c?uld collect games cartridges f?r ?n? base unit inst??d ?f hav?ng bulky game console systems.

The 80s - s?m? pause before th? storm

1980's ?aw growing craze f?r the video ?nd computer game craze, but online gaming wa?n't ?n th? horizon yet. New games w?th bett?r sound ?nd graphics wer? introduced and gained popularity. Pole Position ?nd Pac-man w?re tw? that achieved big popularity. It wa? dur?ng 1980's wh?n Nintendo introduced ?t? f?rst gaming system.

The 90s - revolution begins

The 1990's ??w th? phenomenal growth ?n both popularity and technology mo?tly b??au?e ?f the rise ?f 3-D and multimedia.

Myst, th? intellectual adventure game introduced gaming on th? CD-ROM format. Fancier 3-D graphics hardware made FPS (first person shooter) games such as Quake possible.

The late 1990's s?w th? exponential growth ?f the Internet, MUDs (multi-user dungeons) which made online games wildly popular. New ?nd improved graphical interfaces had people all ov?r th? world playing aga?nst ??ch other not ?nly ?n FPS games but also in real time strategy games (RTS games) ?s w?ll ?? third person games l?k? Grand Theft Auto.

This w?s ?ls? th? period when websites started offering online games ?u?h as tetris, ping pong, mario bros, super Mario, and other free online flash games ?nd non-flash based games free for playing after registering w?th them. This r?ally pushed online gaming into th? popular psyche.

The 21st Century - world ?s ju?t a playground

Early years of the 21st century w?r? dominated b? the DVD-CD-ROM. It ha? changed the w?? online games ?re played. The latest gaming systems ?u?h as Sony's play station ?nd Microsoft's X-box have networking capabilities to enable people play with ?a?h oth?r ?n real time from ?ll ?ver the world. Exponentially growing broadband internet services have made playing th??? online games ??s??ble in true sense of th? word.
